Blasda 2011/12

A great thanks for everyone who helped host a Blasda event in September 2011, it was a huge event far beyond our expectations for this first, tentative year, with thousands of people involved.

Special thank you to our supporters CASP and to our wonderful designers D8, but most of all to communities and producers who’s energy made it happen.

We hope to be back next year and would welcome feedback, ideas, hopes from you about how to develop a local food feast for Scotland. Please send your thoughts to mike@fifediet.co.uk

Thanks!

Aberdeen Blasda

This from Hannah at Aberdeen University Students’ Association…

“We were delighted to offer a mini farmers market as part of our Blasda Local Food Feast at Aberdeen University Student Association. Over 200 students attended over the course of the day and were able to try a feast of food including local organic chutneys, mince bradies made from locally sourced meats, balmoral bread, home made leek n tattie soup and Scotch pies. The AUSA Malt Whisky society also offered a tasting session on the best of local whisky, so our spirits were warmed! Also warmed by the Ceilidh dancing that took place.

The farmers market included a great selection of local fodder. Ola Oils brought an array of their locally pressed oils and Dr. Chris Fenn brought her home made flapjacks to selll to raise money for Compassionate Farming, these were made using Ola Oils. A local social enterprise Community Food Initiatives North East (CFINE) brought an array of local veg and we also promoted the VegBag Coop, a student run veggie bag scheme.

It was a great event, particularly enjoyed by our international students who got to eat some of Scotlands finest foods for the first time. Thanks Blasda! Looking forward to being involved again next year.”

Soil Association Blasda Lunch

The staff at Soil Association Scotland thoroughly enjoyed our belated Blasda Lunch on the 14th September as part of Organic September! We would like to thank Earthy, the Real Bread Campaign and Laura (our head of Scotland office) for supplying the products we ate – and all the growers and farmers at the start of the supply chain. Katie and George had fun putting together a menu including delicious local fresh bread from North Tweeddale with Loch Arthur cheese, roast pork reared in Fife, Phantassie Farm salad and Laura’s homemade spinach and tattie soup, from her garden!

Thank you to everyone for coming to celebrate fantastic local and organic products.

Bring a Dish- Eat a Fish

The picnic was held on Buckhavens beautiful sea front over looking the forth, despite a little bit of rain, lots of people turned up to try some freshly caught mackerel caught by our local sea anglers and strawberries from Woodbanks, a nearby farm. Locally picked blackberry and apple pie and elderflower cordial from the Braes, homegrown salads and homebaked bread were brought and shared around.

One guest said: ‘A quick note to say Ruth and I really enjoyed the barbeque. It went well… and it was good to see different faces’

Kirkcaldy Blasda Brunch

Thanks to Colin from Bread in Fife for producing masses of lovely porridge last Saturday, which, along with fantastic organic bacon from Falkland Farm kept everyone happy enought to buy chocolate chip brioche (yummy) from Barnett’s Artisan Bakery and the Little Herb Farm.

Also present were Falkland Centre for Stewardship demonstrating Love Food Hate Waste and our friends from Greener Kirkcaldy. Everyone was asked to contribute to our Food Graffiti boards in four questions: What’s your Favourite Autumn Food? What’s Wrong with the Food System? What’s your strongest Food Memory? What’s your Food Heaven & Food Hell? What’s your favourite Scottish food? Here’s what people wrote (feel free to add your own in comments….) Read More >>
