Blasda 2011/12

A great thanks for everyone who helped host a Blasda event in September 2011, it was a huge event far beyond our expectations for this first, tentative year, with thousands of people involved.

Special thank you to our supporters CASP and to our wonderful designers D8, but most of all to communities and producers who’s energy made it happen.

We hope to be back next year and would welcome feedback, ideas, hopes from you about how to develop a local food feast for Scotland. Please send your thoughts to mike@fifediet.co.uk

Thanks!

Uist Kicks Off Blasda with Huge Crowds

Great news from Uist as the first Blasda last weekend was a huge success. Organisers wrote:

“The Blasda food weekend held in Lochmaddy on Saturday 3rd September and Daliburgh on Sunday 4th September was a great success.  Over 600 visitors attended to enjoy the tasting tables, see cheese being made, have a fish filleting lesson, see hand made chocolates being made and cakes being decorated.  There were cooking demonstrations by local chefs and the gathered crowds enjoyed sampling the finished dishes and taking home the recipes.

Such was the success of the first day that some of the sellers were short of stock by Sunday! A big ‘thank you’ goes out to all those who worked hard to make the event possible.  Moran taing!”

Uist Blasda

Sustainable Uist and the Uist Wholefood Co-op have come together to create a local food weekend as part of the Blasda Food Feast.  We’ll be spending Saturday 3rd September in Lochmaddy Hall. North Uist and Sunday 4th September in St Peter’s Hall, Daliburgh, South Uist.
We are delighted with the response from local food producers who will be coming along to showcase and sell their products.  We will have beef, lamb, venison, goose, fish, seafood, veg, fruit, dairy, eggs, smoked products and bakery products.  There will be butchery demonstrations, sausage making, cheese making with the Isle of Mull Cheese Company, cake decorating, local chefs cooking up local dishes, a Chinese vegetable cooking demo and Indian food using local ingredients and a local food BBQ.
Joining us from neighbouring islands are: The Isle of Mull Cheese Company, Hebridean Brewery Co., Hebridean Chocolates and Praban na Linne – The Gaelic Whisky Company.
I think we might be full after all that!

Since then, the group has been successful in securing funding from the Climate Challenge Fund, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Historic Scotland, Zero Waste Scotland and the BIG Lottery’s Investing in Ideas Fund to undertake a range of carbon reduction projects.
